A Health Surveillance strategy helps you spot the early signs of work-related ill health in employees exposed to certain health risks.

In some instances it is also a legal requirement under Health and Safety Regulations.

You must have a Health Surveillance programme if:

  • Staff work in conditions where there is an identified disease or adverse health effect related to the work
  • There is a reasonable likelihood of the disease or adverse health effect occurring
  • There is a valid technique available to detect indications of the disease or condition
  • Health surveillance will further protect the health of employees concerned.

As a responsible employer, you will naturally make every effort to eliminate risks. But there are often cases when some risk remains and that is when you need an effective Health Surveillance programme. Such risks might include employee exposure to:

  • Noise or hand-arm vibration
  • Solvents, fumes, dusts, biological agents and other substances
  • Asbestos, lead or compressed air
  • Ionising radiation
  • Diving.
