As every dispute is different, our mediation service takes a flexible approach to intervention, adjusting the process to suit the people and the situation. This is often based on the seven-step ‘Eastburn’ model:

  1. Pre-mediation – to assess suitability and clarify expectations
  2. Mediation begins – initial private discussion with each party
  3. Opening statements – from mediator and each party
  4. Review position – re-frame, re-assess and register any settlement offers
  5. Fact-finding – define issues, set agendas, brainstorm, assess settlement offers
  6. Reach agreement – resolution or ‘pause’, sign agreement, evaluate, close
  7. Follow-up – reinforce settlement or adapt and improve.

Mediation is non-prejudicial and employees do not waive their rights to organisational due process by agreeing to participate.

The aim is to deliver a settlement where all parties are sufficiently satisfied and can move on, with improved working relationships, leading to a better business environment.
