Atos Healthcare provides independent assessments on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
The people we employ to carry out assessments receive comprehensive training in disability assessments and must be approved by the Secretary of State. Their job is different to that of a GP or treating clinician in that they are not diagnosing a person’s condition, but are instead using their clinical knowledge to apply criteria set by government within a benefit assessment structure.
Our role is to provide DWP with a report that meets their rigorous quality standards and forms part of an evidence pack that enables their Decision Makers to reach a decision on a person’s entitlement to benefit.
A continual programme of internal and external audits is in place to ensure high standards in assessments and reports are maintained. Every person is treated individually and, during any face to face consultation, is given the time they need to explain how their condition affects them personally.
We aim to provide as much information as possible to help people understand what to expect from the part of the benefit assessment process that we manage. The content on this website is regularly reviewed and we work with external support groups to help make sure it stays helpful and relevant.
